Here is some more about the Hickory Unit by graduate students who did clinicals there
"I was placed in 1- Hickory, a long-term care unit. This means that the patients generally spend more than a couple of weeks in the psychiatric facility and need long-term care."
"Western State Hospital has two floors. The upper level units are called admissions units, where patients who are first admitted to the hospital go. Once patients are not manic or psychotic, or are determined to need long-term care, they are transferred to long-term care units that are on the lower level of the hospital. There are 5 units on each level, which are all named after different types of trees: Dogwood, Hickory, Oak, Pine and Elm. I spend most of my time with the treatment team and patients on 1 Elm, but interacted with other units’ patients and treatment teams. Patients attend groups, which are like classes, which are rendered toward their treatment and diagnoses. These were on Mondays and Wednesdays, as well as a few on Fridays."
