I noticed that there's no hardware thread so I'll start one.

Here's some topics that you can flame war about:
- Ray tracing: is it a meme? (I've seen ray tracing first hand on the PlayStation 5 and in its current state it is nothing to be excited about)
- Apple's M1 chip
- Will Big Navi save AMD and show those Nvidia shills?
- Will Intel come back to its former glory and re-conquer the desktop CPU sector?
- Is 21:9 a based aspect ratio?

Is spending over 2k on a new computer a good idea if your computer is less superior to the PC you want to buy?

I remember when nerds used to jizz their pants over the Amiga's ray tracing abilities, only back then it was quite cool because nothing else this side of a 6-figure supercomputer could do that kinda stuff.

Computer graphics have achieved the point where any innovation isn't that big of a leap so it isn't impressive. It's not like PS1 to PS2 for example where the difference is night and day.

  • Raytracing is not something that can be taken seriously until it is almost as fast (or even as fast) as rasterization in terms of rendering an entire real-time scene on its own; right now the former is only supplementing the latter and the difference is not significant considering how realistic raytracing can look (albeit not in real-time, but I digress).
  • The gains in Apple's M1 chip are great; it just sucks that Apple is not allowing you to update your OS if you do not have a computer that uses one. It makes sense for them to build computers entirely out of their own parts, but I think they should ease the transition for consumers in terms of support for software.
  • AMD just needs to maintain a good price-to-performance ratio (compared to NVIDIA) and be able to produce enough cards for consumers (i.e. not scalpers) to buy them. I think they can pull it off.
  • Not until Intel get offs of 14 nm++ or whatever iteration they are on by now, and even then AMD is projected to be at 5 nm before they are. If the past is any indicator: AMD will continue to hold a better price-to-performance ratio over Intel. I would say that they have a lot of work to do before they can even consider matching AMD again, but only time will tell.
  • Only for media that is designed with it in mind; the scaling can be iffy otherwise.

Something I never really mentioned about myself on KF is that I'm actually the person who looks over the Kiwi server, sexually physically. I was just thinking about upgrading the thing for Josh, and finally bumping that baby up to 8GB of RAM, so I figured to take a picture of the beut while I was in there, for anyone who's ever wanted to see the Kiwi server.

To avoid shitting up a new forum and a nice thread, I am actually finally updating my machine from like 2010, lol. I've been running 4GB of RAM + some virtualized RAM, because I'm ever so slightly insane, and am also thinking of finally investing in literally multiple GBs of VRAM. Talk about a string of power plays, WOW.

How the fuck have you been living? We live in an age where every website is a 400k LoC React JavaScript abomination that uses more memory than some AAA computer games.

Nice retro setup, with floppy drive and all.
