That's Youtuber/Political Twitch Streamer Dylan Burns, before Ukraine and after having visited Ukraine and gone back for more.

Yeah, I know Dylan Burns is supposed to be a State Dept shill and all that, but damn, his Livestreams are hilarious sometimes:

I'll try to do some more serious posts about his documentaries in Ukraine with a de-mining organization called The Angels of War, as well as his association to journalist Patrick "VeganAF" Hilsman and the @OffBeatResearch website for which Dylan Burns has written an article about demining in Ukraine, a site that appears to be run by a Bellingcat associated individual, which basically makes it sus from the get-go.

For the record, I don't seriously think Dylan Burns is a State Department shill, though I do think it's a great running joke on social media that he is. I do think he's an unwitting mouthpiece of the US State Dept because he's cynical about conflict (more on this later) and desperately wants to believe that there is such a thing as a "just war", when the other side thinks the same thing about themselves and assumes their war-mongering to be justified and justifiable. I think Dylan has that meme flag of the CIA logo in his room just to fuck with people, not because he's actually a CIA agent. I do suspect he's a typical Democrat political careerist who desperately wants the "wartime activist/reporter" credentials that he hopes will fast-track his political career in his home State of Maryland (he said that his true ambition is to be a Maryland politician), but without having to actually serve in the military, unlike some of the politicians he thoughtlessly attacks in his videos, people who unlike Dylan himself are themselves former service members:

Here's a video where Dylan Burns describes being questioned by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) at a Florida airport upon his return from Ukraine. Dylan Burns claims it was a CBP agent and doesn't explicitly say it was the DHS but presumably that was who questioned him. He explicitly named Patrick Hilsman, his associate at the Off Beat Research website (the one that was founded by the Bellingcat associate), as the one person in the US who can vouch for him before US authorities:

I see a skull with a Z on its forehead and a feather(?) on top, with some kind of iron-work woven into and around it. The bottom of the iron work looks like a heart with a cross in the middle. I have no idea what this is. I am guessing it's supposed to depict the skull of a dead Z supporter, so a dead Russian soldier. I don't understand why it's woven into the iron work though. Maybe it's supposed to be like a "Vlad the Impaler" kind of thing, where Ukrainians behead dead Russian soldiers and stick their severed heads onto iron gates to leave the skin the rot off their skulls, as a warning to their enemies? Otherwise I have no explanation for this weird tattoo. If anyone knows please share. Dylan says it's "vulgar" but I think it's a rather disturbing gruesome tattoo. Like, if I got a tattoo of a visibly male skull with the trans logo on its forehead lying on the front-steps of the White House as warning, would I be allowed to enter the US with such a tattoo on my back? Of course not!

Funny, I thought it was media companies who gave their journalists press passes... not a ministry of defense.

And you show it to people, you show it to, like, soldiers and people at checkpoints, and it usually answers all the questions that are necessary for you to keep going on whatever journalistic endeavour that you're going to. Because, the vast majority of times you're gonna be showing it to people it's gonna be at checkpoints. Checkpoints are everywhere across this country. They're on every major road and even in back roads across the villages, across the countryside. So you're gonna be needing to flash it to them quite frequently.

But I got in touch with these people mostly through just personal interaction, just meeting people in bars, knowing a guy who knows a guy, who knows a guy. Being able to dedicate the entirety of my time outside of streaming to this has allowed me to build deep personal ties here in Ukraine. A lot of the time that I'm not streaming, I'm not even, like staying at my apartment that I have here. I usually... there's a good chance that I'm spending time with families or friends that I'm very close with down here, and just relaxing and spending time with them. Staying that their place while writing articles and stuff like that. (Read: he's building repport with the locals so they can get him to people&places.) Because, not only does it help myself embed myself deeper in the country, it's also more enjoyable because it sucks to be alone in a warzone."

This means that when Dylan Burns visited Ukraine, he was there with Patrick Hilsman... but AFACT (I am still going through his videos retroactively), Dylan never disclosed the fact that he was there with Patrick. Kinda strange IMO. In the above video Patrick Hilsman does not identify Dylan Burns by name but instead shows him as a member of his "film crew".

I also want to highlight this part from the above interview:

The fact that the Ukrainians have stuff like early warning systems, advanced satellite technology that the Americans have provided them, has made a huge difference. Just having a warning of a few minutes is the difference between soldiers getting blown up in an airstrike and being able to take shelter and survive it. I witnessed things like that where the technological edge that the Ukrainian forces have, in some circumstances saves a life, and that is a massive difference.

To conclude, when Patrick mentions the fact that Americans have donated "advanced satellite systems" to the Ukrainians, while failing to mention that it was his associate Dylan Burns who brought them those satellites (only to make a video complaining about them not working due to service outages) are Patrick and Dylan in Ukraine then merely reporting on what's happening... or are they actively creating the news and events they are reporting on?

Dylan Burns has posted a video of what he claims is "a war crime" incident he personally witnessed and partially recorded a couple of days ago, where an English animal rescue worker got shelled in one of the recently flooded areas of Ukraine.

I had a look at their map of Ukraine and it's the most unsuable unintuitive shit I've ever seen in my life. They provide no easily interpretative information whatsoever so that you know what you're looking at or looking for. All I could see was a filter on the right hand side of the map that allows you to see how many incidents were allegedly committed by (read: attributed to) the Ukrainians, the Russians or NATO, or "others", whatever that means (they don't explain). I don't know who the fuck this map was designed for but it definitely wasn't your average civilian. Remember, these people claim to be doing a form of "journalism" in this manner, but if their journalism is so technocratic and inaccessible to the common man, who is this "journalism" really for? Surely not the average civilian trying to survive a war.

So here we have a website that is supposedly geolocating alleged war crimes... but we have no information as to whom is running this website and this website cannot be mirrored by any of the known internet archives. Isn't that interesting... If they are supposedly documenting war crimes, wouldn't they want there to be multiple archives of their work off-site? If only in case their website gets attacked by hackers?

I don't know, there's a kind of creepy omnipresence about this Geoconfirmed website, like they're the ones who could literally locate a needle in a haystack from above the earth. The casual, self-assured way that they claim to "confirm" things and attribute incidents to various parties does not sit well with me at all. I was always very suspicious of this form of "industrial" Big Data journalism, and I feel the same way looking at (or rather through) the world of Geoconfirmed.

Burns claims at the end of his Youtube video that he has already shopped the story of this incident with the injured English animal rescue worker to mainstream American MSM such as the Washington Post, so let's see what they have to say about this when they post their article.

I'm watching this interview with a European Bellingcat non-demi-post-journalist(?), and this reluctance on his part to claim a journalistic identity and thus the journalistic responsibility that comes with it, is very typical of the Bellingcat-adjacent milieu in which Dylan Burns but also many others operate in this day and age:

This perfectly illustrates how you get someone like Dylan Burns, who by his own public admission does have a press pass (that he claims was given to him by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense), writing an article for the Bellingcat-adjacent Off Beat Research where Dylan very demonstratively, in the very first paragraph of his article, proceeds to remove his press patch, so he can supposedly embed better with the military:

But on this trip, that patch is missing: earlier in the day, I was advised by Ukrainian armed forces to take it off due to the fact that it was reflective, and made me easier to spot.

This is, of course, the point of the patch: to highlight that you are different from those around you. Society, professional conduct, and typical rules of engagement seem to constantly shout at us: “you are a member of the media, and should not be mistaken as a combatant!”

Unfortunately, the Russian army has rewritten those rules. With over 30 journalists already killed in the past seven months in Ukraine, it should be clear that this distinction does not matter to the Russian army. So instead, I wear as much green as possible, like I was instructed to by my traveling companions the day before. Absent an army-issued combat uniform, this is the best possible solution, and draping myself in green makes it so I blend in – at least somewhat – with the ocean of lush forestland covering most of Zaporizhia oblast in eastern Ukraine.

Dylan Burns made sure to bring up him removing his press patch on this recent podcast Trying Not To Explode:

I went to the front line in Ukraine and I had a press badge on me, it was reflective, and I was told specifically to take it off, because it being reflective as a press badge, it could, for some soldiers just be a bull's eye.

Here's a screenshot I made of an actual CNN reporter wearing such a press patch that Dylan felt the need to remove:

As you can see this CNN journalist lived to tell the tale even and despite wearing the "PRESS" patch visibly on his vest... so why did Dylan Burns feel the need to remove his? Was it because he felt at risk... or was it rather because Ukrainian soldiers knew that civilians would be more willing to talk to him if he wasn't clearly marked as a journalist? Isn't a journalist removing their press patch kinda like an officer taking off his uniform and wearing civilian clothes to better infiltrate some scene? Or a soldier taking off their uniform and insignia to better infiltrate an enemy camp? (Next time a soldier asks you to take off your press badge, ask them if they would please remove their own insignia first.)

Dylan Burns' claim that he had to remove his press patch because it supposedly made him a target of Russian snipers is likely bullshit IMO. His removal of the press patch was mainly a performative act, whereby he symbolically casts off the label of the press and thus the obligations of an actual journalist, just like the rest of these Bellingcat-pedigreed post-faux-non-journalists, who nevertheless have to shop their stories to the mainstream press - as Burns explicitly stated he's currently doing with his story about the injured animal rescuer, trying to get Washington Post to write about it.

Again, I don't have a problem with any kind of citizen journalism - KiwiFarms for years argued that if whatever Open Source Intelligence is good for Bellingcat, it's good for KiwiFarms (or 4chan, or Doxbin) as well. I do have a problem with the undercurrent of contempt that Bellingcat seems to have for traditional journalism, at the same time as they seem to depend on traditional journalism for their reach and clout. There seems to be a symbiotic if not outright incestuous relationship between the two here that is masked as antagonism, when they seem to be wholly ideologically aligned otherwise. Bellingcat - and other similar outfits - is very much a symptom of the traditional media downsizing their research departments and outsourcing research ("they [trad media] increasingly don't have boots on the ground") to such post-faux-non-journalists who want the clout of journalism but not the responsibilities.

All jokes aside now, I do think Dylan removing his press badge and making sure to mention it at every opportunity was mostly performative. Dylan Burns did a Livestream about the Wagner mutiny, and was asked to show his Ukrainian trident tatoo:

He now refuses to show the tattoo. He then made a remark that is a very strong indication that he has actually read his thread here on OF, because he said: "Every time I show it, someone screengrabs it to claim it's a Natsee tattoo.", which is not what I said, I merely posted tweets from others replying to him about his tattoo, pointing out that the trident is considered a symbol of Ukrainian far right groups.

Dylan refuses to confirm my own discovery, that his tattoo was likely based on an anti-Putin drawing of Putin's severed head impaled on a Ukrainian trident. I guess Dylan liked the original design but did not want Putin's face on his body, so he replaced Putin's skull with a more generic Z skull.

Dylan Burns is openly using Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat as a source on his latest Livestream on the Wagner mutiny:

Dylan Burns by way of Higgins is now suggesting that the RU military supposedly never struck Wagner, that no evidence whatsoever was provided by Wagner of this alleged bombing, basically accusing Prigozhin of making up an incident as an impetus to launch the Crusade on Moscow, something he had been planning months before but merely needed a false flag event to initiate.

One of his listeners then asks Dylan Burns if it was possible that Ukraine struck Wagner and Wagner are lying about it being Russia to launch the mutiny, he reverts to these being no evidence:

The head of Russia's feared Wagner private army suggested Sunday that four Russian military aircraft that reportedly crashed in a region that borders Ukraine may have been shot down by Russia's own forces.

Russian officials have not commented on reports in Russian conventional and social media that two fighter planes -- an Su-34 and an Su-35 -- and two military Mi-8 helicopters crashed in the Bryansk region on Saturday.

State news agency Tass cited unspecified emergency services sources as saying the Su-34 and one helicopter crashed. Other sources, including Vladimir Rogov, the head of a Russian collaborationist organization in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia province, claimed four aircraft went down.

A spokesman for Ukraine's air force, Yuriy Ihnat, denied Sunday that Ukraine was involved in downing the aircraft. In remarks on Ukrainian television, he suggested that Russia itself could be responsible, but he later walked back the remark, saying it was an attempt at joking.

However, Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin offered a similar hypothesis.

"Four planes, -- if you draw a circle in the places of their fall, it turns out that this circle has a diameter (and all of them lie exactly in a circle) of 40 kilometres (25 miles). ... Now go on the Internet and see what kind of air defense weapon could be in the center of this circle, and then build your own versions," Prigozhin said on Telegram.

Prigozhin, whose forces are in the thick of a grinding monthslong battle for the city of Bakhmut, clarified that he was not "in the know" about the situation. But he has repeatedly criticized the Russian military for its strategy in Ukraine and for allegedly failing to supply Wagner with the ammunition it needs in Bakhmut.

So allegedly there was an incident over a month ago where Russia supposedly shot down between 2 to 4 of their own aircraft, with Ukraine denying only responsibility, and Wagner allegedly witnessed this incident and reported it on Telegram.

If it's true that Russia has already shot down 2-4 of their own aircraft, how on earth can Higgins be so sure that Russia attacking Wagner was just a false flag pretense for Prigozhin to launch the mutiny?

Furthermore, if Prigozhin was making shit up about Wagner being attacked by the Russian military, why did DW and WaPo report his statements? I'll assume Bellingcat has their people within DW and WaPo - since they've managed to infiltrate every Western mass-media outlet - so why don't they ask their people inside DW and WaPo how they fact-checked this story?

Dylan Burns then shows a bunch of footage of people in Rostov cheering on Wagner... but if Higging believes this was all staged, weren't the crowds also staged? Like, once you start speculating like this, where does it stop?
