Let me preface this post by stating that this is all from my own personal experience.

I find Dogs to be better than Cats for the simple fact that Dogs make you feel better as a person. They are always happy to see you whenever you show up. They help you stay active. They are very loyal and will be there for you when you need them. They can sense when someone is happy or sad, angry or glad. Dogs can make your shitty day into a better one because even if all your co-workers and boss/bosses are the biggest pricks in the world that don't appreciate the work you do, you can come home and the instant you see your dog wagging its tail acting like you're the best thing ever, it's like everything bad that happened before just went out the window.

Cats on the other hand are just pre-madonna attention whores. They fuck-off to do their own thing and only come around when they want something, so it's like their furry roommates that mind their own business. They are more active at night when you're trying to sleep, and they show their appreciation by hacking furballs all over the floor. The fact that they need their own little area to shit is the dumbest thing ever. Why the fuck would anyone want a smelly-ass box in their house? (yes, ALL liter boxes are smelly, even if you use the "instant scent killer" litter, unless you get one of those self-cleaning ones that cost around $100 or more)

A well-trained dog can be great. Cats are a gamble, in my experience, as to whether they'll be affectionate or indifferent. Of all the pets I had or knew, I preferred my mellow and cuddly felines. But when I'd get the spiteful brat of a cat, it was a bummer.

I had a dog that was a destructive goof. He'd get so excited that he'd tear things up or run right into my legs, almost knocking me over. It was endearingly frustrating, but cute too.

My cats went outside to use the bathroom. They did their own thing, but when returning home most of them had a 'Sup? I did my thing, you did yours, but now we're both home' vibe. This I liked, as taking care of them was very easy, and it was always comforting to come home from working third shift, seeing my cat skipping to the porch like they, too, worked a shift, every morning.

Dogs are cool dudes, but cats suit our lifestyle and temperament better. We have two cats, I think one is a bit retarded but he isnis super affectionate. His sister is a bit more stand-offish but has her moments. I would post their dox but I'm afraid of breaking the forum with their cuteness.

Literally my last ex's cats to a tea

... yes cats, as in plural. I dated a crazy cat lazy for 10 months. She had 5 of them, and all of them, with the exception of one, would give her so much grief. They used to be her moms but a year before i met my ex, her mom died of cancer, but she still kept the cats even though they treated my ex like shit.

One of them was a black'n'white female who was so old that death was following it around. It was the only one that snuggled with me anytime. The other cats would just hide in the room that used to be the mother's bedroom because they wanted no part of anyone except when they were hungry and/or needed to shit in the liter box which my ex kept in the bathroom near the toilet bowl (which let me tell you... smelling cat urine while trying to take a comfortable shit is NOT a pleasant experience at all). One of them went so far as to hide in the closet because for whatever reason it was afraid of me, and the rare times it did come out, it was pissed off that i was anywhere near my ex to begin with.

The worst part was that these things hadn't been to the vet in god knows how long. Sometimes they would escape the house to chill in the back yard and one of them got attacked by a Raccoon and wound up with a limp leg because of it, but for all I knew the cat could have also been infected with something. Eventually we did manage to take them all to the vet (which even though I was protected from head to toe, I still wound up getting scratched and bitten) and the one with the limp needed medicine, ironically not for the raccoon attack, but for the fact that this dumb ass liked to lick the brushes off of the broom that was in the kitchen so it got sick from licking whatever shit was sweeped up on the floor that landed on the broom.

I've experienced both, and I don't really have too clear of a preference. Cats are nice and can take care of themselves. Intelligent and agile. Dogs on the other hand are an entire spectrum ranging from shitty little chihuahuas and pugs that are freaks of nature that provide no benefit whatsoever except as status symbols to hounds and husky wolves that are as close as real partners and are highly intelligent, having a degree of reasoning capabilities and communication with their owners.
I'm not really someone to own animals, but if I could choose, I'd pick a dog. A nice big dog that can go hiking with me and can support me when I'm alone (Not depression! I mean living in the wild).

I could tell you the answer but you couldnt handle it... dont dig too deep into this one lads. the CIA is all over it.
